Listen, this conversation you’re about to hear with my new friend, Alison Cook, felt like I was sitting on a couch across from her, tasking her with helping me navigate the things I’ve spent years avoiding navigating. There’s one part, about a quarter of the way in, where Alison talks about adjusting how you approach the personal narratives you’ve spent years telling yourself.
You know the ones, they probably started when you were younger, as you were stepping into the locker-lined hallway for the first time. Or sitting at the dining room table as your parents told you they weren’t staying married. Or not making the team. Failing the test. Not getting invited. What seems like a fleeting moment becomes a defining story. At times told in a whisper before you step into a new season, other times blaring across your thoughts when you face failure or disappointment.
Alison speaks to these narratives, but suggests simply adding in two new words to the storyline – “What if…” My heart and my head are still reeling over the thought. The most basic shift – it’s changing everything for me. So, I hope this is a start for you. A simple way to feel seen in your times of not-okayness as we talk through the combination of faith and psychology, the root of our negative thoughts and how we can stop numbing what we can’t face but, instead, keep growing.
